Former St.Cruz MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate was charge-sheeted on Wednesday on charges of allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl in 2016. The charge sheet was filed by the Panaji Women Police against Monserrate and Ms. Rosy Ferros who was an accomplice in the alleged rape case.

According to the Navhind Times the police said the charge sheet has been filed before the district and sessions court, Panaji, under Section 376 (rape), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Information Technology Act for allegedly inducing children for online relationship.

Babush was arrested in 2016 on accusations of molesting and raping a minor native from Nepal. The news came to light when the minor was found by the police who went missing after she was molested by former MLA. She disclosed the matter to the police and the authorities of a Protection House that, she was sold to Babush for 50 lakhs by her mother. She was injected with the stupefying substance and was raped repeatedly without her consent. The media and police began speedy investigations and filed an FIR against Babush who was out of Goa at the time. Rosy Ferros, the victim’s mother, and Babush were then arrested on the charges of offense and human trafficking, human trafficking, and rape/human trafficking/poisoning respectively.

With so many accusations but no evidence to trace, the accused were released on bail and were asked not to leave the country as the investigations were still on. Sources said the probe had found no evidence to prove the allegation that Rs 50 lakh had been paid to the mother, and that the girl had been administered stupefying substance.

In defense to the allegations, Babush said that it was a big political conspiracy and that he is being framed wrongly to tarnish his image in front of his people. In the statement given by Babush, he said that he employed the girl to work at the request of his parents. She was caught stealing some money from the store and was dismissed. He said that he did not have any intimate relations with her, said Scoop-Woop.

The complaint was lodged on the basis of the victim’s statement, her medical reports proved to be positive. Owing to two different birth dates, the police had referred the victim to the GMC for an ossification test. The test had shown that the victim was 17-18 years old at that time.

The ‘truth’ is yet again tested for its accuracy. What can be the truth? Could it be the girl is really lying to avenge her suspension or is she under any pressure? Why are our political leaders playing dirty games? Had we not have enough? What do you have to say? Comment your opinion.
