Robbery is becoming a regular affair in Goa with everyday cases getting booked at various police stations in Goa but this case is little different. In this case, the caretaker himself murdered an elderly woman by strangulating her said the police sources. This incident came to light on 14th June when the friend of victim Jose Heredia from Porvorim lodged the complaint with Porvorim Police station said the sources.
According to the sources, Porvorim police arrested two persons, Dinesh Patra a native of West Bengal residing at Socorro and Chandrakant Bhise a native of Dharwad residing at Vasco. The police sources have informed that both the accused are suspected to have involved in the brutal killing of the senior citizen. According to Porvorim PI Jivba Dalvi, the accused strangulated the elderly woman before decamping with the Gold Ornaments and cash worth lakhs of rupees.
The sources in the police have said that the third accused is still at large while one of the accused named Patra, who was arrested by Porvorim police, was the caretaker of an elderly lady. The sources have also revealed that the caretaker had established a close friendship with the victim Natividad Fernandes (87) and later convinced her to stay with him in a rented flat. Prior to that, the victim was staying in an old age home “Reach out” where she came in contact with the accused. Patra is allegedly brought the victim from old age home on the pretext of taking care of her in the flat.
The reason behind the murder is said to be the lavish lifestyle of the victim which Patra noticed while staying with her in the flat. According to the sources, after moving into the flat with accused the victim lady Natividad started trusting Patra with her bank cheques, gold ornaments, and money but soon she discovered that Patra is withdrawing the cash from her account and also stealing the gold ornaments. Subsequent to this she asked Patra to quit the job as a caretaker.
According to the reports, Two days after he quit the job, he along with a friend who was an ex- jail inmate strangulated the senior citizen with a pillow, and to wipe out evidence, they buried the body at a cashew plantation at Mayem. They later fled with jewelry and cash.
According to the police, during the interrogation, the accused confessed to have committed the crime. The police succeeded in recovering the stolen gold ornaments and exhumed the body with the help of deputy collector Bicholim and sent it for a post-mortem examination at GMC.
The police team managed to crack the murder case with the help of PSI, Mahesh Naik, Vishwajeet Chodankar, and Sajit Pillay besides police constables Vidhyadhar Amonkar, Prashant Chopdekar, Keshav Patekar and others. Police have attached a car and a pillow used in the murder.
