In one of the most shocking incident, the Canacona rape and murder accused Vikat Bhagat made the claims that he is innocent and the murder of Irish national Danielle McLaughlin was been done by three of his friends whom she denied the sexual favors. He said that he had been framed in this case and that police did not allow him to speak out the truth in the court. He wrote this story in a 29-page letter that he wrote to his sister while sitting the jail.
According to the sources, the prime accused in the Canacona murder case Vikat Bhagat had written a letter to his sister and in that letter he mentioned that he did not kill the Irish National Danielle McLaughlin and the same was done by three of his friends who killed the Irish National Danielle McLaughlin since she denied them the sexual favours and he also quoted that he remained silent for so long since the police did not allow him to reveal the facts in the court.

After his arrest on March 15th, 2017, the prime accrued in Danielle rape and murder case Vikat Bhagat had been lodged into the police custody. Initially, he had been kept at Canacona police station and later shifted to the Colvale Central Jail and since then he remains in the Judicial Custody at Colvale, said the sources.
According to the sources, while in Colvale Jail he wrote a 29-page letter to his sister detailing the series of events that took place since he first met Danielle in the year 2016 at Palolem till the time she had been raped and murdered in Canacona.
It may be recalled that the fully undressed body of the Irish National Danielle McLaughlin was found by the police near Devbag beach in Canacona on 15th March 2017. The body was lying in the field around 150 meters from the main road. Soon after receiving the information the Canacona police had detained several suspects before zeroing down to a history-sheeter Vikat Bhagat, who is the prime suspect in this case. The police had registered the case as murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested Bhagat, who will be produced in court on Wednesday for remand. In the interrogations the accused had agreed to had murdered the Irish National by strangulating after he raped her in the secluded place.

The police sources have said that the letter written by the accused Vikat Bhagat is in Konkani language and according to the contents of the said letter, Bhagat made the claims that he had made several attempts to reveal the truth on before the court several occasions while he was lodged into the Canacona police custody but police did not allow him to do so. “Even the letter which I was drafting was taken by the police,” he said.
In his letter, he repeatedly mentioned that he was in a physical relationship with the victim Danielle McLaughlin and that on a fateful day three of his friends were at the Green Park restaurant situated in Palolem. According to him all of them were drunk and had a dose of drugs (charas) too.
In his story, further Vikat made the claims that soon after the victim Danielle McLaughlin decided to go to the Leopard Valley in Agonda she did not want his friends to accompany them. After freshening up at their rented room in Palolem, he says, both headed to Agonda. Bhagat says all this can be substantiated with timings given in the letter and confirmed with CCTV footage.

Continuing further, he claimed that on the way they decided to smoke one more joint (charas) at the place, which they frequented regularly. This was where McLaughlin was later murdered. “While sipping beer I received a call from (a friend) that they are in Leopard Valley and asked us to join them, to which I replied we will do in some time and informed them of our location,” he says in the letter.
Bhagat further states, “I saw two bikes coming towards us switching off the headlights. They came to me when I questioned why they were here, (friend) asked me to tell Danielle to have sex with them.” Bhagat says that following this McLaughlin slapped one of them and the man stripped her and raped her. “I tried to save her, but since I had undergone shoulder surgery, I could not help her,” Bhagat writes adding he was badly beaten up by his three friends.
Following this McLaughlin started weeping but after that, another one of the men demanded sexual favors and she slapped him also. The man smashed two bottles of beer on her head and she fell on the ground, Bhagat says. Thereafter, two of them held her hands while the third hit a heavy stone twice on her head after which she died.

Bhagat further claimed that since he was scared by the turn of events and did not inform the police fearing he would be blamed for the murder. “A day after the crime I spoke to (friend) on phone questioning why they did this to which he apologized saying it was a mistake and requested me not to spill their names if the police come to know,” Bhagat alleged.
There is a strong possibility that the above story could be the fabricated one to misguide the investigations, since, if according to the accused Bhagat if he was really in love with the Irish National he would have done everything possible to save her life and considering that he could not manage to do so as he narrated in his story, he could have still gone to the police and confessed of the crime which he did not do. He never revealed any names of the so-called friends in the preliminary investigations too.

There is also a strong possibility that he himself might have invited the friends along with him but at the end the scene turned out to be a dirty and he decided to cover up everything by smashing her head and disfiguring it as he told in his earlier confession to police that he disfigured her face to erase her identity. There are stories of one of the drivers one of the vehicles passing from that road on that ugly night had seen the girl coming out running from the field without any dress on her body asking for help and the same could have been the victim herself.
