With the new development taking place, there is a possibility of a complete ban on the sale of beef in the state. According to the sources, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) who is one of the major pillars of a BJP-led coalition government has decided to put the complete ban on the cow slaughter in the state.

Goa is amongst the one of the state in India where the consumption of beef is very high as it is the part of the diet of Muslim and Christian community in the state. The ban on beef may lead to creating serious political situation in the state as many of the BJP legislatures belongs to the Christian community and in the past BJP government under the leadership of former CM Parsekar had assured that there will be no ban on the beef in the state since eating beef is a part of food habit in Goa.

The ideology of MGP and BJP matches to each other and hence MGP remains one of the major pillars of BJP throughout. In the last government, MGP had removed its support from BJP due to some internal differences but they joined again under the leadership of Mr. Parrikar. The beef has been banned in most of the states in India which are ruled by the BJP government except for Goa. But now the MGP is taking the lead in the state to bring the ban on cow slaughter.

According to the sources, The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), a part of the BJP-led coalition government in Goa, has sought a complete ban on cow slaughter in the state. “As a party, we support a total ban on cow slaughter in Goa. There should not be any cow slaughter activity in the state,” MGP leader and Goa minister Sudin Dhavalikar said.

It may be recalled that few days ago the RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat who is also the mentor of BJP had condemned the violence in the name of cow slaughter across the country and demanded the ban on pan India level. “We want a law banning cow slaughter across the country,” Mohan Bhagwat said.

IN THE HINDU COMMUNITY COW IS TREATED LIKE MOTHER

On the backdrop of the statement of Mr. Bhagwat, the MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar has decided to initiate the complete ban on a cow slaughter in the state of Goa. Speaking to media the MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar said, “Our stand has always been against killing (of) cows, who symbolize mother(s) in our culture and If the new government wants to do something good, they should first shut down the Goa Meat Complex,” Sudin Dhavalikar said.

NEED OF TOUGH LAW ON COW SLAUGHTER IN THE STATE

According to the sources, Cow slaughter has already been banned in many states of India. The example of UP (Uttar Pradesh) is one of the most recent one where Yogi Adityanath took charges as the Chief Minister. The Uttar Pradesh government has cracking down on illegal slaughterhouses. In BJP-ruled Gujarat, which is set to go to polls this year-end, the state Assembly amended the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act to make cow slaughter a non-bailable offense with a maximum punishment of life imprisonment. Those in possession of beef will be fined Rs 1-Rs 5 lakh with seven to 10 years in jail.

Meanwhile the states like Kerala where again the community demands the consumption of cow meat the ban has not been implemented and the BJP ally in Kerala had called it a waste of time. According to the sources,  at the meeting of NDA allies in New Delhi on Monday, BJP ally from Kerala, C K Jaanu had said that the government must focus on delivery of benefits of its social schemes for Dalits, tribals and the downtrodden and not on “raising controversial issues like beef”, The Indian Express had reported.

The Kerala Congress (T) leader P C Thomas told the media that, no government can ban on cow slaughter just because it is part of the Directive Principles of the Constitution. He said Constitution has left the matter to states who would be “more sensitive to interests and traditions of communities”. According to the Indian Express report, leaders of North-East parties wanted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to consider “the sensitivity of ethnic communities” while drafting policies.

WHAT ABOUT GOA?

Banning of beef and cow slaughtering is not easy in the state of Goa where the major part of the community consumes the meat. According to the reports published in Goa Prism on March 24, 2015, BJP government in Goa had denied banning the beef in the state since it is an essential part of the cuisine of minority communities in the state, Said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. “Regardless of what the Centre does, Goa has minorities section between 39-40% and if it is part of their food habits, why and how can we ban it? For people especially minorities eating beef is part of their food,” Parsekar had told the Media then.

Mr. Parsekar had also stated that Eating beef is a part of food habit in Goa and it should not offend others. In his statement Parsekar had said that Goan eating beef as part of their cuisine “The specialty of Goa is that Hindus, Muslims, and Catholics live together in love and harmony, they know the importance of respecting the values of others and that is why this issue (BEEF BAN) have never gone out of control in our state and it not ever”.
