Babush is facing the charges of raping a minor girl from his own constituency and he has also been booked by the Goa Police crime branch under the sections of human trafficking and POSCO. The mother of the victim girl was also produced in court on Friday and remanded to three days police custody. The mother is accused of selling her daughter to Babush for 50 lakh rupees

The statement of the 16-year-old girl victim girl was recorded under section 164 before the JMFC Panaji on Thursday. As reported by the TOI in her statement, the girl stated that the MLA allegedly purchased her for Rs 50 lakh from her mother, and raped her. All she remembers, she said, is watching television and the next thing she knew was waking up naked in a bed with blood stained sheets and the MLA sitting on the sofa next to the bed wearing nothing but shorts.

According to the sources, police asked for the 10 days custody of Babush but the counsel of accused told the court that his client will fully co-operate with the investigation and there is no need of 10 days custody. The defense lawyer also argued that this case is politically motivated to tarnish the image of respected citizen and known political figure of Goa. Babush also took an objection about the search carried out by the police without informing him.

The defense counsel appearing on behalf of Babush has argued that his client has surrendered before the police voluntarily. Our intention is to cooperate with an investigation. “It appears to me that investigation, in this case, has filed to tarnish the image of my client who is the well-known figure and has a higher reputation in the society. The entire case is cooked up to damage his political career,” said Adv. Rajiv Gomes.

He also blamed the investigation agencies for leaking the sensitive details related to the case in the media. “It has done to tarnish the image of my client. We have filed the application before the court to direct the investigation agencies to not release any information related to this case in the media,” said Adv. Gomes.

When media asked the home minister about this issue he said that he prefers not to interfere in this matter. “He is the elected representative of the people and it is not just once but he has been elected by the people for the three consecutive terms and that is why police must listen to his side also,” said the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar who also holds the portfolio of Home Ministry.

According to Parsekar, there should be no injustice done to the victim as well as to accused. “Let the law take its own course” he added. Parsekar said that police will do their job and he will not interfere with it. The police sources have revealed that they are searching for more accused. That includes a lady who took the victim to Babush.

The interrogation will get over in another three days time and Babush will be presented again for the further remand if needed by police or will be released on bail. The time will tell what will happen next. Meanwhile, please leave your comments on this issue.
