AZAN ISSUE STRIKES IN GOA – MUSLIM BROTHERS FROM ST. INEZ AREA HAVE BEEN ASKED TO STOP MAKING THE USE OF LOUDSPEAKERS DURING THE PRAYERS

It may not be an exaggeration, if we say, that Goa is perhaps the only state in India, where people from the diverse community live in peace and harmony. But some recent developments and huge migration have changed the atmosphere of the state. The letter issued by the CCP Commissioner Ajit Roy, an IAS officer states that No Prayers on the Loudspeakers will be allowed to avoid disturbing the public peace and tranquillity in the surrounding area.

The Muslim community of St. Inez is not happy with the notice issued by the CCP commissioner Mr. Roy in regards to their prayer practice. According to the report published by the IANS news agency, Recital of prayers over the loudspeakers at one of the largest Muslim burial grounds situated in St. Inez Panaji have been banned by the city municipal corporation. The Muslim community has got hurt with this order and they have decided to protest against the same. The community demands that the order to be revoked with the immediate effects.

NOTICE SENT BY CCP MAYOR TO MUSLIMS IN ST. INEZ

The Commissioner of CCP (Corporation of City of Panaji) Mr. Ajit Roy has issued an order in this regards which says that the breach of peace and tranquility of the surrounding area will be tolerated. The sources have revealed that there is a complaint against the prayers which makes use of the loudspeakers, although it is irrelevant as who lodged the complaint but the most shocking thing is why now?   

“It has been brought to the notice from surrounding area at St. Inez, Panaji, that the prayers are carried out through loudspeakers/public address system with very high decibels at the burial ground of Muslim(s) kabrasthan (graveyard) at St. Inez,” said the order dated November 24, when city was playing host to the 48th International Film Festival of India, the country’s biggest film event, said the reports published by The New Indian Express “The community should ensure that no prayers to be held on Muslim burial ground/kabrastan by loud speakers/public address systems so as to avoid disturbing the public peace and tranquility in the surrounding area,” says the notice.

The Jamat ul Muslamin Gausia Sunni trust had condemned the order issued by the CCP commissioner and released the statement of their spokesperson Mr. Babani Shaikh stating that they will not tolerate such things against their community. “Prayers are carried out at the masjid and not at the burial ground. This is now a tradition going on for the last 20 years… This move has really hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims and the Corporation should immediately withdraw the notice or the community will gherao the Commissioner,” said Babani Shaikh, trust spokesperson for The Jamat ul Muslamin Gausia.

The Muslim community staying in St. Inez area in peace and harmony for several decades and they are always offering the prayers on the loudspeakers. But now suddenly out of the blue some people have come ahead objecting the same. The exact reason behind this action is not yet known but one thing is sure that this kind of notices will surely hamper the peace and harmony in the locality. What do you think about this issue?
