Finally, the post-mortem on the body of a 25-year-old British national Ms. Danielle McLaughlin, whose body was found near Devbag beach in completely undressed condition on Tuesday morning was done on Thursday by the team of three doctors specially appointed for this task. The autopsy report has confirmed the existence of a sexual assault and death due to the strangulation. The deceased also had the deep crack in her skull which was the resulted out of the impact of a blunt object on her head.
The post mortem of the deceased Danielle was performed by the team of three doctors at the GMC (Goa Medical College and Hospitals) and the entire procedure was recorded on the cameras for the purpose of evidence, based on the guidelines of Supreme Court. Danielle McLaughlin, a 25-year-old British national from Liverpool was on her short vacation to Goa and on her trip, she met the accused Vikat Bahgat, whom she had met on her last visit to the state.
Meanwhile, according to the police sources, the medical examination of the accused has revealed an existence of injuries on his private parts and six other injuries on his face and body. Police feel that the injuries that found on the groins of the accused have been the outcome of resistance from the victim when the accused tried to force himself on her, but since the accused was physically strong he overpowered the victim and sexually assaulted her.
The sources have revealed that Ms. Danielle McLaughlin had landed in Goa on 23rd February 2017 and as per her plans she straight went to the Arambol beach in north Goa where she stayed with her another friend before going to Agonda. The reason behind her trip to Canacona was the participation in the celebration of Holi and she was supposed to meet her friend from the previous visit to Goa and it was obviously the accused, Vikat Bhagat.
On the day of Holi which was on Monday, the victim Danielle was seen with the accused Bhagat at Palolem beach. She had participated in the Holi celebration party on the Shack at Palolem where accused accompanied her. She was with the accused for the whole day and was last seen at the beach shack in Ourem Palolem where her CCTV footage was captured. That was the last place she was seen alive and the next day morning her body was found by the police near Devbag beach around 5km from Palolem. How she reached to the Devbag is not yet known but she was going around with the accused and last she was seen with the accused at the beach shack at around 9.30 pm before the duo had proceeded to the Leopard Valley to attend the party said the sources.
In the police interrogation, accused had revealed that he had killed the victim after sexually assaulting her under the fear that she might narrate the incident to police and he would have to face the legal consequences. According to the accused, the victim had resisted his act of sexual abuse and accused was sure that she will go to police thus he killed her to silence her. He later smashed her face with the beer bottle so that nobody could recognize her. “After murdering the victim by strangulations the accused disfigured her face since he did not want anyone to identify the victim. The accused made the use of beer bottle to disfigure her face,” said the Canacona police.
Meanwhile, DySp Sammy Tavares, who is also the SDPO of Quepem, told the media that, The Post-mortem report ascertaining rape and police have invoked Sections 376 (rape), 201 (destruction of evidence) and 394 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused. The FIR, registered on Tuesday had earlier slapped murder charges again him. The autopsy was conducted today by a team of doctors headed by Dr. Madhu Ghodkirekar, Dr. Sunil Chimbolkar, and asst. lecturer of forensic dept.
According to the reports published in Heraldo Following the autopsy, it was concluded that her death was caused by asphyxia as a result of compression of the neck with craniocerebral damage consequent to injuries to face and head. It was also established that there was an injury in the form of a bruise on the vaginal wall which suggests sexual molestation by the arrested 23-year-old Vikat Bhagat who has 16 cases including robbery, dacoity, and housebreaking against him at Canacona police station making him a dreaded history-sheeter from Canacona. Foreigners have been his prime targets. The first case was registered against Bhagat in 2008 when he was just 15-year-old. It was a case of robbery.
The doctor has preserved the material for DNA profiling and the samples were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for the chemical analysis, said the sources. While the British and Ireland Consulate representatives are already in Goa, the deceased’s friends are expected in Goa on Saturday to claim the body.
