Thirty-two-year-old Manish Shanke, a resident of Borda, Margao met a watery grave off Benaulim Beach in the wee hours of Monday. His body was later recovered by the lifeguards, but he was pronounced brought dead by the Hospicio authorities.

The deceased, Shanke, along with his friend went to Benaulim after having tea at Fatorda on early Monday morning. His friend claimed that Shanke insisted that they both go for a swim at Benaulim at around 6 am. It was only when there was no sign of Shanke returning back to the car, his friend became worried and he took a walk along Benaulim Beach to find out his whereabouts. He later claimed that he alerted the lifeguards, who recovered the body off Benaulim Beach. PSI Gawas along with The Colva Police team is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Drishti has said the body floating in the sea was found at 9.30 a.m. The statement said that the lifeguard on duty spotted a body floating about 100 meters out in the sea. He rushed into the waters with a rescue board while relaying a call for back up. The body was retrieved and rushed to the hospital in the Drishti jeep even as the vital signs were missing.

“On enquiring further by the lifeguards it was informed that two boys from Margao came to the beach early in the morning at 6.30. While one went off for a walk, the other went to sleep in the car. When the boy awoke after 9 am, he realized his friend was still missing so he set out to look for him,” the statement added.
