In one of the most shocking incident, a 23-year-old youth, the resident of Mandrem in North Goa, and perusing his studies in Goa Engineering College Farmagudi, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at the college hostel.
The incident took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, said the police sources. According to the TOI report, Pratik Naik, 23, a final year student of an engineering college in Farmagudi, Ponda, allegedly committed suicide in the college hostel. He was pursuing his bachelor of information technology course.
Police said the student, a resident of Mandrem, Pernem taluka, was the only one occupying the room and the reason behind his suicide was not yet known. “It is suspected that the youth could have taken the extreme step during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday,” police said.
Quoting the college staff and his colleagues, police said the student was seen alive on Wednesday evening, around 7 pm. As he was neither responding to calls made to him by other students nor had come out of his room until Thursday afternoon, his colleagues alerted the college staff who later broke open the door.
Naik’s body has been preserved in the GMC mortuary. An autopsy is expected to be conducted on Friday. A case of unnatural death has been registered at the Ponda police station. PSI Ripha Barreto is investigating the case.
Naik was the final year student and the reports suggest that he might have committed the suicide earlier night while the incident came into the light only on the next day at 1 pm when one of his classmates noticed that his door is locked from inside and he was not responding to the calls.
This is a very sad state of an affair wherein the students are undergoing tremendous pressure and unable to cope with it makes them take such extreme steps, there is a need of proper coordination between the parents and their kids to make sure that they are not going through some sort of extremity.
