We have covered this issue in our earlier news article where we mentioned, based on the available information then, that just few roads will be converted into One way traffic but now there seems to be a change and in the plan and CCP has decided to convert the 19 roads of the city into one way traffic. It will be the drastic change and may need some time for the people to get adapted to the new traffic plan.

According to the available information around 90 thousand vehicles enter and exit Panaji city every day which is huge traffic in itself. People from all over the Goa come to Panaji as most of the government offices and major corporate hub are situated in the capital city of Goa. Total parking facility in Panaji can accommodate only 7700 vehicles, out of which 5500 are two wheeler and 2200 hundred are four wheelers. The parking of vehicles results into filling the streets which makes the two way traffic move in snail speed. “The idea is to decongest the city and promote faster movement of vehicular traffic in the city”, Said the Traffic Cell, DySP Dharmesh Angle.

This will be a huge operation in itself for the city of Panaji and traffic cell along has made the provision of around 110 police personnel from traffic cell as well as the IRB to handle the situation of new traffic plan implementation to regulate traffic and guide commuters during the one month trial period. However during the trial period commuters will not be penalized if they enter through a no-entry direction. “After studying the new circulation plan, if required necessary minor changes will be effected. The views and suggestions of public in general will also be appreciated during this period”, Angle informed adding that installing the road signages will be undertaken by the CCP.

All the 17 roads will be converted into one way on trial basis from 1st September 2015 in Panaji city for the period of one month. According to information the decision was taken by the Traffic police and the CCP to decongest and streamline traffic in the city. The existing major roads like 18th June road, Dr A B road etc will continue as one way and will carry traffic in the existing directions.

The Following Major Roads will be converted into one way Traffic

  1. M G Road from Old Secretariat to Caculo Island
  2. D V road- from hotel Samrat to Kundaikar Nagar and from Singbal book stall to Kundaikar Nagar
  3. Gen Bernard Guedes road- exit gate of CCP market to Dempo residence (MG Road)
  4. Caetano Albuquerque road- from Dada Vaidya hospital to Mansion guest house
  5. Menezes Braganza road- from apple corner to Bhonsle hotel
  6. Dr P Pissurlekar road- from Kundaikar Nagar to Azad Maidan junction
  7. Dr P Shirgaonkar road- from Mahalaxmi temple to Govinda building
  8. Swami Vivekanand road from Boca de Vaca junction to 2 STC
  9. Dr T B Cunha road from Cecol bar to A B Naique square
  10. Helidoro Salgado road from Rayu chambers to Kamat centre
  11. Governador Pestana road from A B road to CCP market main gate and from D B Marg to exit gate of CCP market (along fish market)
  12. Dr Wolfango Silva road from EDC house to hotel Trimurti
  13. Rua Ismael Gracias road from Helidoro Salgado road (Navhind Bhavan) to Menezes Braganza hall
  14. Rua Rodrigues Freitas road from Alcon chambers to Samant sweet mart
  15. Lane from Aparant handicrafts store to Varsha book stall along Azad Maidan

Beside the above the four main Arterial roads of the city namely M G road, Dada Vaidhya road, 18th June road, and Menezes Braganza road will be strictly reserved for one-way traffic from September 1.

“During the trial phase no challan will be issued to people, but once it is notified, I will have to challan violators,” deputy superintendent (traffic) Darmesh Angle said. CCP had approved this proposal on July 31 and had asked the traffic cell of Goa police to draw up a plan for implementation.

According to the sources from CCP this is the new traffic plan is the part of larger smart city mission plan which will be implemented in the phased manner which may also include the introduction of hop-on-hop-off buses at a later stage. CCP and the police will erect temporary flexi boards on all the streets to alert citizens about one-way roads.

There is no doubt that with the new traffic plan into the place the Panaji city will soon be converted into perhaps the first Metro city of Goa. The first step towards the moving of Metro is the disciplined traffic and smoother movement of the vehicles. CCP may also introduce the multi level car parking into the capital city soon. All will depend on the success of the existing plan. Let’s come together and help making our city into the true smart city. We will try our best to display the image of the new road map as ready reckoner for you while moving in the city with your own vehicle. Please do leave your comments and suggestions on this issue.
