In another horrifying incident, a 17-year-old Higher Secondary student who immolated herself after her teacher scolding her in Muvattupuzha, succumbed to burn injuries at government medical college in Kottayam on Saturday. The student made the suicide attempt on September 3 after she returned home from Muvattupuzha Government Model Higher Secondary School. According to the sources, the student Nandana, daughter of Anidharan at Kadalikad in Vazhakulam died on 10th September.
[su_expand more_text=”READ MORE” less_text=” ” height=”0″ hide_less=”yes” link_style=”button” link_align=”center”]According to police, school principal Sunitha had seized a letter from Nandana’s bag on September 3 and scolded the student at her office room in front of other teachers, causing mental agony. When the student returned home, she brought kerosene from her neighbor’s house and poured it on her body and immolated herself.
At the time of the incident, there was nobody in the house except her elderly grandmother. Hearing Nandana’s screams, neighbors rushed to her place and took her to a hospital in Thosupuzha. Looking at her condition, doctors advised the neighbors to take the girl to Kottayam, as Nandana had suffered 70% burn injuries. The incident came to light only when Ettumanoor magistrate took her statement.
Initially neighbors and family maintained that Nandana’s clothes caught fire when she burned trash in the compound of her house. According to the sources, Nandana’s parents told the police that, Nandana has a liking for writing stories and poems and the letter might be her literary work. According to the police the letter is addressing a friend and starts with ‘Dear friend’ but the name of that friend has not been mentioned in the letter.
According to the sources, Earlier the case was registered under Section 75 in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules 2007, which will be altered to 305 of the IPC after Nandana’s death.
