A 16-year-old student returning back from school was stopped by two boys who allegedly forced her to drink acid. The incident took place on Wednesday noon in Southeast Delhi’s Kalkaji area, where two boys targeted her, barely 200 meters from her school, police said. Her parents have, however, complained that she did not ingest the substance herself, but was forced to do so by two youngsters who had been stalking her for the past 20 days.

On doing so, the girl felt a burning sensation in her mouth and throat followed by severe pain in her stomach. She had fallen unconscious after this. A student of a nearby DU college noticed the girl lying unconscious on the roadside and informed the school authorities about it. She was taken to a private hospital in the neighborhood. The teachers informed the girl’s parents, telling them that she had probably eaten something that didn’t agree with her.
When the mother reached the hospital, the girl was in a semi-conscious condition. She was later taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical but stable. According to sources, Dr A K Rai, Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, said “The girl’s medical condition is critical. She is presently in the intensive care unit (ICU). She has acute respiratory distress syndrome.”
A complaint was registered by the girl’s family at Kalkaji police station under sections related to acid attacks. Police said the girl’s statement was yet to be recorded and her family’s allegation that she was forced to drink “acid” was yet to be verified.
According to the police, teams were out searching for the two suspects, though they admitted no one had seen the duo in the area where the girl was found unconscious. The investigators said they questioned an auto rickshaw driver who used to drop the child to the school from her house in Sangam Vihar and had also taken her to the hospital, but even he could not provide any information about the youths. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said they had collected CCTV footage from around the alleged crime spot. The investigation is on but they will wait for the girl’s statement.
