If the Mughal Emperor Shahajahan, mesmerized by the beauty of  Kashmir, called it heaven on earth then one look at the beaches across the Konkan strip in Maharashtra might have evoked a response like Paradise on earth from him. Just one look at the beautiful stretch of soft white sand beaches at Tarkarli is enough to mesmerize anyone. Sea and sand blending in enchanting natural harmony, gracefully cruising boats in calm and cool river waters add to the beauty of this beach. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg. Tarkarli is a small village located in the Malvan Taluka of the Sindhudurg district of the state of Maharashtra. It is on the confluence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea in the southern part of the state, and is situated at 6 km south of the Malvan. Tarkarli is a beautiful sea facing place, with lots of small islands all around and with the background of the Shuru trees. Tarkarli is known for its long and narrow stretch of white sandy beach and clear blue water of the sea. The water is so clear at this place that it is clearly visible at least up to the depth of 20 feet. All these add to the beauty of the place and make it a perfect holiday destination.

Tarkarli Beach

It has special importance in history because of its connection with the legendary Maratha warrior Shivaji. He wanted to build an invincible fort on an island, with a considerable distance from the Janjira Fort. Thus he chose the island of Kurte for it and made a fort strategically made to keep the enemies away. The fort was built in 17th century and was named as Sindhudurg Fort, also known as the Malvan Fort. The main occupation here is fishing. People go for fishing throughout the year except during monsoons because it is not very safe due to the rising water of the sea and the current. The place has pleasant weather almost throughout the year with little change in the summer and winter temperatures. However winter is still comparatively more pleasant and is a better time to visit, the best time being October to March

Tarkarli is a wonderful place to experience and witness the varied marine life, like dolphins and other sea animals which are often visible. For adventure water sports lovers, snorkeling and scuba diving facilities are also available at Tarkarli.  It is also a protected region for the female turtles. While at Tarkarli, do make a point to taste special Malvani food such as variety of fish items, ‘kombadi-vada’.
